A Brief History of the Stuart Horse Artillery Batteries
The Stuart Horse Artillery Battery was formed in late, 1861 as an assisting element for J.E.B. Stuart's
cavalry. The battery was made up of men from Virginia, Maryland, Alabama,
Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee.
In the Fall of 1862, with the reorganization of the horse artillery, Pelhams Stuart Horse Artillery Battery
was divided into two gun batteries which were identified as the 1st and 2nd Stuart Horse Artillery. Captain John Pelham was promoted to Major and battalion commander, and James Breathed
was promoted to Captain and battery commander.
The 2nd Stuart Horse Artillery was Captain Mathis Henry and later succeeded by William McGregor
and G. Wilmer Brown.
Both batteries served in numerous actions, seeing service in countless battles including Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, Brandy Station and Gettysburg.
